French tourism site

Situated on the west coast of France between la Rochell and the Loire River at Nantes, the Vendee is one of France’s most popular holiday destinations.  It is renowned for it’s  unique combination of coastline and ever changing countryside. To the holiday maker and home owner alike it offers a taste of 'real France', with picturesque villages, historic towns, French culture and some of the best beaches in France. All  of this is accessible in less than 2 hours from the channel ports, yet is far enough south to enjoy reliable summers and a warm, sunny spring and autumn.

On average, temperatures are well into the high 20’s during the summer months with temperatures in the mid 30’s not uncommon at the coast. Vast expanses of sandy beach extend virtually uninterrupted along coastline and a climate similar to that of the South of France ensures that sunshine beams down on around 100 miles of sandy beaches that stretch down the western coast of France.

In the North-East of the Vendee you will find the rolling countryside of the 'Bocage' with its undulating pastures and woods, offering an authentic rural setting. Further south the countryside is dotted with fields of sunflowers, corn and of course grape vines. Here you will find many sleepy villages with only the occasional noise of a tractor or farm animal to break the tranquillity. Towards the coast, the undulating countryside gives way to the reclaimed lands  known as the 'Marais'. Here the landscape is criss-crossed with drainage canals, the occasional lake and forms an ideal habitat for both the local birdlife and flocks of migrating birds. Around the Marais you will also find locals harvesting salt and selling some of the best shell fish in France. Oysters are a popular local dish and farmed nearby and collected fresh daily for sale in the village shops or on the spectacular fish stands inside the many local supermarkets.

The more adventurous may like to walk along the ‘Passage Du Gois’ causeway between the mainland and the popular island of Noirmoutier, watch out for the tides though as the road is flooded at high tide! There is a fantastic Chateau and Sea Life centre here as well as some superb shops and restaurants.

Within 30—40 Minutes of the property there are 5 spectacular Golf courses and for those prepared to travel a little further 30 or more golf courses to test your skills against. Remember that in France each golf course has a ‘slope’ rating that you can use to adjust your handicap up or down according to the difficulty of each course !! Domangere (within 40 mins drive) has one of the highest ratings in France and is a testing challenge with several lakes and some of the best greens to be found anywhere in the Vendee.
